What Ever Happened To Good Old Social Pressure?
Last year I paid a $385 fine for having a limb on the ground in my back yard. It fell out of the tree. I let it lay. I got a warning ticket. I cut it up and hauled it and on inspection day another limb fell. I got fined.
My son took in a stray dog that followed him home. “Mumbles” lasted about three weeks before it got out of the yard and disappeared. We found him at the pound. Paid $25 to get him back (plus the shots and registration to make him into an honest dog). The next time it happened about two months later it was $50 to retrieve him with the warning that the fine would double each time thereafter. The next time was the last.
I have an empty lot. It grows grass and weeds. Some of them got to be over 12″ tall when my mower broke down for a week right at mowing time. I got a warning and at the last minute went over with the weed eater and did the whole lot by hand.
I have a rent house that was vacant. We were over there watering to keep the yard alive. We left the water on, running slow on one corner of the yard. When we left we forgot it. We remembered four or five hours later and hurried back over to find water running down the street. We heaved a sigh of relief for not having found a ticket on the door and turned the water off.
If you live in practically any American city or even smaller town, I’m sure you could think of similar stories. I just wonder how we ever got along before they invented “Code Enforcement Officers”. Though I don’t actually remember it being that bad the world must have been a real mess back then. You know, without proper supervision and all. Probably just the “Good Old Days” effect making me forget the bad stuff.
Or maybe the approval of one’s neighbors was more important back then. Perhaps people were more inclined to take the time to try to influence one another and your immediate neighbors were more important than those far away.
I live in the older part of a small town that has been overrun by the city sprawl. The codes which I am now forced to live with are voted in by folks that live in the new subdivisions of zero lot line big box houses that lie over by the mall miles away from the old center of town. We have big trees with limbs that fall occasionally. They have little twiggy sticks just stuck in the ground by the builder.
But most of all, I don’t think the folks in those big box houses are even aware of the content of the one size fits all laws that are adopted and prosecuted in their name by the city planners and code enforcers and city court officials who are paid out of the proceeds of the fines they collect.
How far into the country do I have to move to get away from these idiots? I hate to give up my DSL.
